2003 toyota avalon review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big car comfort with electronic safety and sophistication. introductiontoyota avalon is a large, comfortable sedan with tight handling and a flawless ride. It has plenty of power and excellent brakes. Electronic wizardry and a well-developed chassis make it an easy car to handle in hazardous road conditions. When equipped with the available front bench seat, it can transport six passengers in typical toyota comfort and quiet serenity.  revised front and rear styling give the 2003 avalon a more road-gripping look. For passenger comfort and convenience, an air filtration system and sunvisors with extensions are now standard. For 2003, avalon is safer than ever, with multi-stage front airbags and iso-fix child-restraint tethers.  . lineuptoyota avalon is available in two trim levels, xl and xls. Both use toyota's silky-smooth 3. 0-liter v6. This engine produces 210 horsepower with 220 pounds-feet of torque. Avalon is front-wheel drive.  xl comes with front bucket seats 25,845) or a front bench seat 26,665). Xl models come fully equipped with side air bags, dual-zone air conditioning, air filtration system, power windows, door locks and mirrors, sunvisors with extensions, and a 120-watt am/fm stereo with cassette and cd players.  the more luxurious xls model reverses the pricing with the bench seat version 30,305) being less expensive than the same vehicle with bucket seats 30,405). Xls models add automatic climate control, a driver information display (compass, trip computer, outside temperature and calendar functions), fog lights, aluminum alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.  leather upholstery is optional.  . walkaroundsome might say that the toyota avalon is not eye-catching. That isn't to say it's unattractive; it looks like a toyota sedan. Its best features are electronic and mechanical. The wing-shaped halogen headlights and wide grille with vertical rails provide a slightly toothy, smiley-face look. An air dam under the molded front bumper provides a subtle racy touch, and the optional flowing trapezoidal fog lamps are needed to complete the facial aesthetics.  . interioravalon is a roomy car with plenty of shoulder space. We found the front seat easy to get into and out of. High window sills, the trend nowadays, make the chamber feel deep. Carrying long, narrow objects is made easier as the rear center seat has a pass-through that opens up to the trunk.  we tested an xls model. Its interior sports ample doses of burled walnut, good, simple switchgear, and solid-feeling control stalks. There's even a leather boot on the column-shift lever, a nice touch. Also included are soothing electro-chromatic mirrors that self-adjust to reduce glare, and an easy-to-adjust dual climate-control system providing independent settings for driver and passenger.  the list of interior features is long. The data system is housed in a big rectangular window in the center of the instrument panel. The feel of the leather, the doses of walnut, the big recessed instrument panel, and especially the inside shape of the c-pillars, all make the avalon interior reminiscent of a cadillac seville. That shouldn't be surprising, as the toyota avalon was designed and built in the usa, and a veteran of gm's large-car division led its development team.  . driving impressiontoyota avalon is smooth and quiet with extremely low levels of noise, vibration, and harshness. All we could hear on a rainy day was a creaking in the windshield wipers, like an old screen door opening and closing, opening and closing.  the ride is flawless. Handling via rack-and-pinion steering is tight, even direct. While some label this as 'no character,' we think 'purity' is a better call. The chassis can be felt lightly rising and falling over undulations, but that's not a flaw, it's a soft balance appropriate to the car.  the michelin 205/60r16 tires were impressive in the wet. We could see the water, we could hear it, but we couldn't feel it. We hit a shallow double pothole. We heard a light thump, but scarcely felt it. We drove over a washboard-unpaved road. We felt it, but not much.  then we got a little daring in the wet, blasting through a long curve on a two-lane road, heavy on the throttle at 65 mph. Something faster, smarter and more sensitive than us was doing all the tricky work.  we mashed the brake pedal as hard and fast as we could. Excellent anti-lock brakes said, 'no problem. Because we were full on the pedal, brake assist wasn't triggered. We never felt them, they were so smooth.  we saved the most exotic technology for last: vehicle skid control (vsc). It's a lexus hand-me-down, remaining innovative as it moves along from $50,000 cars to $30,000 cars. It's only available on the xls, but for only $650, it's a real deal. Using throttle intervention or applying individual wheel braking, vsc makes the appropriate adjustment in grip. We heard the vsc warning ding that says, 'whoa bucko!' simultaneously the orange traction-control light came on, and we felt the car magically bite and come back into position. Vsc had cut the throttle and hit the abs brakes on all but the outside rear wheel. It's toyota's flagship sedan.  . model lineupxl with front bucket seats 25,845), with front bench seat 26,665); xls with front bench seat 30,305), with front bucket seats 30,405). assembled ingeorgetown, kentucky. options as testedpackage 895) includes heated front seats, jbl premium stereo with 6-disc in-dash cd changer, 205/60r16 tires, aluminum wheels, power seats with driver seat memory, leather upholstery. model testedxls 30,405).

2004 chrysler crossfire review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Mercedes underneath, high style above. introductionchrysler's all-new 2004 crossfire is a two-seat coupe that combines american design with german engineering. No mercedes looks as stylish as the crossfire, however. Chrysler says the crossfire is not a red-blooded sports car and is intended to be more of a boulevard cruiser, but we think it's somewhere in between. The mercedes engine isn't up to the output of that of the bmw z4 roadster or nissan z or infiniti g35 coupe. But the crossfire's rear tires are bigger than those seen on some race cars, and its performance is thrilling because the car is acceptably light at just 3060 pounds.  the crossfire originally appeared as a show car at the 2001 detroit auto show, and chrysler decided enough folks liked the design then. We think it's still fun to look at even after its conversion to a real production car. It's actually a retro-mobile like a mini cooper, pt cruiser, or new beetle. Unlike those other cars, however, crossfire is patterned after parts of classic french bugattis and talbot lagos from the elegant pre-war period of auto design. The world's top classic car collectors can recognize the shape of the rear hatch, the curve of the fenders, and the subtly bubbled roof from designs they covet, although the crossfire is a blend of many lines, not a copy of any particular beauty of the golden age. Chrysler says the name crossfire is derived from the crossed lines of the front and rear body sections.  on first sight the crossfire impressed us with all this copied elegance, and we think the car looks terrific. We don't think all cars should look like this, however, and we think the 'speed strakes' that dimple the hood, as well as the non-functional vents behind the front wheels, are kind of cartoony.  for a while after we first saw the crossfire we kept thinking of the post-war 1959 sl gullwing, and we kept trying to look for similar lines of this classic copied onto the crossfire. Finally we realized that it was the custom three-piece luggage set that fits in the rear cargo area that reminded us of the gullwings of the past. It's tight inside for a six-footer, yet the driver's seat slides back far enough for an nba hopeful. The crossfire cockpit is tight and coddling like a sports car's. It's reminiscent of the slk, yet has curiously tiny sun visors. We think it will take some time for us to warm up to the bright metal trim on the center console. driving impressionwe found the crossfire accelerates with strength and force even though the output of 215 horsepower is ordinary these days. The three-valve engine sounds mildly sporty, and feels smooth as a luxury car's. It sounds louder and more purposeful than the same engine in the mercedes e320 sedan. We particularly like the quick throttle response, which gives the impression that the engine is stronger than its 215 horsepower would suggest. But that's significantly slower than sports cars such as the similarly affordable nissan 350z and pricier boxster s.  the crossfire does not overpower its chassis, in fact it feels just the opposite. The a-arm front and multilink rear suspension and the monster tires feel like they can cope with more speed than the engine is capable of providing.  we drove the crossfire over winding mountain roads east of san diego, smoothly paved with lots of combinations of tight bends and fast sweeping curves. The crossfire shares its floorpan with the slk, but in the chrysler it's modified with extra tie bars and frame gussets that prompt chrysler to proclaim class-leading chassis stiffness. The crossfire corners as flat as a sports car. Chrysler says this is a function of the car being tuned for more relaxed cruising than all-out sport driving. The crossfire sports huge 225/40 by 18-inch front and 255/35 by 19-inch rear tires. Two tire designs are available, a michelin pilot sport 2 and a new continental z-rated (high-speed) all-season. The tires are relatively large for a car that is not intended to be an uncompromised sports car, such as nissan's 350z, but we suspect the crossfire's large tires were specified for styling appeal.  the six-speed manual gearbox, a mercedes unit, somehow didn't seem to feel as direct and quick shifting as we remember from previous mercedes roadsters. We actually preferred the crossfire with the five-speed automatic, which worked flawlessly and felt perfectly matched to the 3. 2-liter engine. It has a manually shifting gate, too, which chrysler calls autostick on its cars. Manual shifting automatics are not something we take great pride in learning to shift smoothly, but we felt we could warm up to this unit given the time an owner would have with it.  the brakes are sensitive and responsive. The crossfire can stop like a sports car, a result of its large 11. 8-inch vented front and 10. 9-inch solid rear rotors matched with massive tires. Like the slk, the crossfire makes use of a comprehensive stability and traction control system. It's the first time the mercedes system has been used on a chrysler. When engaged, this system makes the crossfire nearly impossible to upset in tricky conditions.  at 60 mph a rear spoiler pops up just under the rear window, and it cuts slightly into rear vision, but at least the noise from the spoiler's motor was not intrusive. What we did notice was that the sporty exhaust note was still audible while we cruised on the highway. It doesn't offer the performance and handling of a true sports car, such as the nissan z, and there's no v10 planned, so viper owners should feel safe with bragging rights. It corners flat, its mercedes suspension always feels controlled and it has the latest in mercedes anti-skid technology.  the crossfire could nearly be called a special edition. It's built in germany and shipped here in relatively small numbers. The maximum number that will come to the u. What the company learns from this low-volume crossfire will transfer to mainstream chrysler sedans in the future. In any case, we like the crossfire's unique shape and the evocative design. model lineupcrossfire 34,495). assembled inosnabruck, germany. options as testednone. model testedchrysler crossfire 34,495). 2000 gmc sierra 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Luxurious and quiet. introductiongmc completely re-engineered and redesigned its line of pickup trucks last year. The sierra does everything better than the previous-generation c/k pickups (which are still available). It rides better, handles better and stops quicker. It is faster and more powerful. And it's more comfortable. The sierra is one of the most luxurious pickups we've ever driven, setting new standards for quietness, plushness, and freedom from squeaks and rattles.  gmc has chosen a conservative design for its new sierra. But the design breaks it away from the chevrolet silverado. The sierra uses a unique grille, hood, fenders, fascia, bumpers and headlamps to make it distinctive. Underneath the sierra's conservative looks is a great truck that has almost nothing in common with the way things used to be done at gmc before it was combined permanently with pontiac. New options include fender guards for 4x4 models, soft tonneau cover, a new automatic dimming mirror with a built-in compass and exterior thermometer.  there's also more power: horsepower and torque ratings are increased for the 4. 8-liter v8 and 5. 3-liter v8 engines; and trailer towing ratings have been revised upward.  the 2000 gmc sierra is built on a frame that is the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever built. The frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape steel. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness.  three v8 engines are available, in 4. 8-, 5. 3- and 6. 0-liter displacements, from 270 to 300 horsepower. All three are based on the new gm small-block v8. A 4. 3-liter v6 is still available and comes with a number of improvements, but the v8s will be sold in much higher volumes.  a 5-speed manual gearbox is standard in the base truck. All offer a smooth, quiet ride and quality feel. interiorthe gmc sierra's interior is one of the most inviting and comfortable in the business.  the interior reflects traditional gmc pickup truck thinking. The door openings are now the largest in the industry and the cab is the roomiest. All use pleasant graphics in white on black. The sound system control panel is located above the climate controls. There are three 12-volt outlets at the bottom center of the dashboard for radar detectors, cellular telephones, laptop computers, and other accessories. The front seats were equipped with optional heaters. Air-conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers. A compass is incorporated into the sle's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed through either of the side doors with a wrench. New mounting and isolation hardware reduces noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. This is a very strong truck, and its strength lets the suspension soak up and manage all the bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is luxurious. Its 143. 5-inch wheelbase improves the ride and enhances high-speed stability. The new engine is a much better small-block than before, and we recommend the 5. 3-liter over the smaller 4. 8-liter version.  brakes have been improved substantially over the previous model and it's a welcome improvement. Braking force comes into play only an inch into the pedal travel, a welcome improvement over the mushy pedal on the previous c/k pickup. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking whether the truck is loaded or empty. Its stylish looks set it apart from the truly conservative silverado.  the sierra sle we drove is among the smoothest, quietest, most civilized, best equipped, and most enjoyable pickup trucks we've driven. 2008 ford taurus x review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. So it's ready to compete in the hotly contested crossover segment with a whole bunch of new arrows in its quiver.  like the ford taurus and mercury sable sedans, the taurus x is loosely based on the same architecture as the volvo s80 luxury sedan and volvo xc90 suv and it uses the same swedish haldex all-wheel-drive system as the volvo on awd versions. Likewise, last year's continuously variable transmission has been replaced by a new 6f six-speed automatic.  this new powertrain makes the 2008 ford taurus x a whole lot more fun to drive than the freestyle crossover was. Simple math tells us that makes the haldex all-wheel-drive system an $1850 option on all models.  sel comes with cloth upholstery, manually controlled air conditioning, am/fm/cd, six-way adjustable driver's seat, power windows, power locks, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  the eddie bauer edition adds leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic temperature control, power adjustable pedals, 6cd, front consoles, eight-way adjustable driver's seat with memory, woodgrain applique trim. Eddie bauer carries a distinctive two-tone paint job, plus 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and tires, wiper-activated headlamps, and eddie bauer logos inside and out.  limited adds premium audio system with subwoofer, second-row consoles, chrome interior trim, auto tilt-down in reverse for outside mirror, heated front seats.  options for the taurus x include voice-activated dvd navigation system 1995), reverse sensing system 295), power liftgate 475), auxiliary hvac system 650), dvd entertainment system 995), advancetrac electronic stability control 495), power moonroof 960), heated seats 240), sirius satellite radio equipment 195), and 18-inch seven-spoke chrome wheels 695).  safety features include front, side and curtain airbags, abs and traction control. All-wheel drive is optional. Latch child seat anchors and rear safety locks are standard. walkaroundin the design change from freestyle to taurus x, ford has completely redone the front end, with a large three-bar horizontal grille that fits in better with the ford family look of the focus, fusion, edge, and the coming flex. The hood, fenders, headlamps and driving lamps are all new, with a bit more bling around them here and there. From the dashboard rearward, though, it's pretty much carried over from the freestyle, because it was a pretty solid package to begin with.  likewise, the edge-clone taillamps, rear quarter panels and decklid have been redone, and the rear bumper has been rejiggered to feature exposed dual exhaust tips. The roof rack has been strengthened and reinforced to carry more load. interiorthe ford taurus x cabin has a light and airy feel, an important feature. Epa-rated passenger volume is 146 cubic feet. Taurus x seats up to seven people.  cargo capacity is generous, with a 15 cubic-foot space behind the third row, 47 cubic feet behind the second row with the third-row seats folded, and 86 cubic feet with all the seats folded down, according to epa measurements. The power liftgate makes loading easy. And the taurus x has a relatively low load height when compared with other crossover suvs, which makes loading and unloading heavy objects easier.  the second- and third-row seats are very easy to flip, fold, and reset. The second-row seats slide fore and aft and recline for an extra measure of flexibility.  overall, the interior ambience is modern, nicely laid out and, the materials are reasonably good throughout. The well-crafted seats, panels and other accommodations have a quality feel, as do the instruments, controls, shifter, seats, console, and dashboard. This system has received positive reviews from everyone we've talked to who has learned how to use it. The sync system has the ability to have text messages read aloud, voice recognition for control of both phone and music functions, and phonebook transfer. The system is upgradeable for future players and for additional functionality down the road. That's especially true when compared with the old 3. 0-liter engine and cvt transmission, which was awful.  the 2008 engine is quiet and smooth at idle, with a pendulum mounting system that separates its motions and vibrations from the rest of the car. It sounds healthy, powerful and smooth at full throttle, and the taurus x has very good acceleration for passing. And, as mentioned, the taurus x is very quiet inside at freeway speeds.  no complaints on the steering and suspension. The taurus x has pretty good steering feel for what it is, a family hauler, with plenty of steering assist for easy driving around town and decreasing assist at highway speeds so it doesn't wander or get sloppy.  the ride is soft and compliant, with plenty of suspension travel and damping to soak up bumps and potholes. There's not much body roll (lean) in the corners. We'd prefer to have one size wider tires for more aggressive cornering, but that would probably eat into the gas mileage.  the brakes are very solid and nicely progressive from top of pedal to bottom. We never felt the standard esp system go on, but it's always there, and now it's standard on all models. summarythe ford taurus x is a much better vehicle than the freestyle. The acceleration, shifting performance, powertain smoothness, and fuel economy are of a much higher order now. The instrument panel is more interesting and prettier to look at. The space, and use of space, is excellent. Taurus x is a solid crossover suv, it's practical and it's affordable. Loaded with navigation, satellite radio and the dvd entertainment system, the taurus x is a really good long-distance traveler as well as an around-town family hauler.  newcartestdrive. Com correspondent jim mccraw filed this report from dearborn. model lineupford taurus x sel 26,615); eddie bauer 29,355); limited 30,335). assembled inchicago, illinois. options as testedpower liftgate 475), auxiliary hvac system 650), dvd entertainment system 995), dvd navigation system 1995), sirius satellite radio equipment 195) includes six-month subscription. model testedford taurus x limited awd 32,185). The ford taurus x is a crossover vehicle that combines space-conscious and people-friendly packaging with a powerful modern powertrain that delivers performance and efficiency. The taurus x is available in front- or all-wheel drive, and is powered by a 263-hp 3. 5-liter v6 engine that is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The taurus x can seat up to seven-passengers. Standard safety features include led brakelights, traction control, electronic stability control, abs, six airbags, including curtain airbags for all three rows of seating. For 2008, the ford taurus x is a renamed and refreshed ford freestyle with a more powerful engine and more standard equipment.
