2011 kia sorento review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new car-based version of midsize suv. introductionthe 2011 kia sorento is an all-new crossover utility vehicle, completely redesigned from the ground up with a totally new structure. The 2011 sorento is much more like a car than before. The new suspension is nicely tuned to muffle rough pavement. On smooth curves when driving a bit more aggressively, it feels decently agile and easy to control with perfect steering feel.  larger in every way than prior models, the 2011 sorento can be ordered as a three-row crossover seating seven. The new sorento also has 15-percent greater cargo volume than its predecessor. One walk around this stylish new sorento makes clear that it means to compete toe to toe with the premier midsize crossovers, chevrolet equinox, toyota highlander, ford edge, and honda pilot.  the exterior styling of the kia sorento is crisp, freshly contemporary. It delivers adequate performance and adequate fuel economy, achieving an epa-estimated 21/27 mpg city/highway for sorento 4wd with 6-speed automatic. Its interior uses quality materials throughout. To keep the front-row proprietors amused, the well appointed sorento features an am/fm/satellite/cd/mp3 (or add available high-power 10-speaker infinity audio), bluetooth connectivity, usb audio input jacks, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and either an available rearview mirror with backup display or a full-on rearview backup camera.  all in all, the 2011 kia sorento is a fully equipped contemporary family crossover. Sorento comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, lx and ex come with 6-speed automatic. Sorento ex v6 is powered by a 3. 5-liter v6 engine and 6-speed automatic.  sorento 19,995) comes standard with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, am/fm/cd/mp3/sirius satellite radio, auxiliary and usb audio input jacks, bluetooth connectivity, tilt and telescope steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, trip computer, 17-inch alloy wheels.  sorento lx 22,395) and lx 4wd 24,095) add body-color heated outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, auto-up and down driver window, illuminated vanity mirror, second-row armrest with cupholder. Convenience package for lx 1000) includes roof rails, rear parking sensor, rearview mirror with backup display, heated front seats, fog lamps.  sorento ex 24,595) and ex 4wd 26,296) upgrade with automatic dual-zone climate control with ionized air purification, fabric/leatherette seats, eight-way power driver seat with lumbar controls, fog lights, automatic headlights, rear spoiler, leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start, 18-inch alloy wheels. Premium package for ex 1500) includes roof rails, leather seats, heated front seats, rearview backup camera. Limited package for ex models 2000) includes navigation system with real-time traffic, infinity 10-speaker audio, 18-inch chrome wheels, interior mood illumination, and high-style leather trim.  sorento ex v6 27,195) and ex v6 4wd 28,895) come with rear air conditioning. Premium package for ex v6 2700) includes roof rails, leather seats, heated front seats, rearview backup camera, panoramic sunroof. Dvd entertainment system package 1000) for ex v6 (requires sunroof delete) includes dvd entertainment with overhead screen and headphones.  third-row seating package 700) includes 50/50 split-folding third-row seats.  safety features include the mandated dual front airbags plus side-curtain airbags for head protection and front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, electronic brake-force distribution, hill start-assist control, downhill brake control. It has a forward-lunging stance, the result of a low and compact nose, followed by long, dynamically rising lines to rearward. And kia has been particularly successful at executing the current high-grille look (dictated by body-integral front bumpers) without causing the nose to seem high and awkward.  the grille is flanked on both sides by sly-looking upper complexes for headlights and turn signals. Lower complexes contain foglights and are finished in matte-black to match the grille mesh.  to maximize interior volume, particularly in the third-row seats, the sorento roofline makes only a slight taper downwards at the rear. Similarly, the rear passenger doors extend back over the wheel housing to optimize access to third-row seats.  the sorento's shape is more than just a pretty face; it slips through the air at highway speed with minimal wind noise. And sure enough, there is gray simulated-wood trim, not the real thing, in the driver's compartment. But to deliver good value, kia goes for simple but handsome fixtures. The controls and switchgear are of high quality, with good tactile feel. This lacked some of the more sophisticated onscreen visual aids for backing while turning, as found on some premium crossovers. Similar units in some other vehicles light automatically upon being opened.  we found the driver's seat, with eight-way power adjustment and lumbar support, to be excellent, firm, supportive, confidence-inspiring. The right front seat, however, is adjusted manually.  the second-row bench seat was comfortable, though even with the front seat well forward, second-row legroom was so-so. But then, this is not a large suv and kia has achieved no spatial miracles. On the other hand, the company says a 6-foot, 7-inch nba player can drive the sorento in full comfort.  the third-row seats are a bit of a compromise, as they are in any but the most grandiose three-row vehicles. Tilt-folding the second-row seats forward to access the rear involves a bit of calisthenics, as the seats are fairly heavy. Once the unlucky, last-row galley slaves are in place and the second-row seats slam down and lock, the latches are hard to release and fold forward from the rear row. Headroom in the far rear is minimal, as well. The climate control worked flawlessly, offering strong volume when requested. And the rear roof-mounted dvd screen, which pops down behind the two front bucket seats, should provide plenty of amusement for those with nothing to do. Finally, with all seats folded down, maximum cargo volume is 72. 5 cubic feet, a massive improvement over the previous model. driving impressionwe're used to kias being small, cheap and cheerful, and this suv is certainly cheerful, in a roomy, upscale way. The new unibody construction isolates engine vibration well. Moving away from the curb onto choppy pavement, the structure again proves its worth, having excellent sound damping and an impressive feeling of sturdiness.  the macpherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension are nicely tuned to muffle and damp pavement irregularities the vehicle is passing over. On smooth curves when driving a bit more aggressively, this crossover feels decently agile and easy to control. Much of this is thanks to kia's firm, spot-on steering effort. Steering is power-assisted but requires the driver to make forthright moves to left or right, there's no light-headed wandering or numbness of any kind. This no-nonsense steering feel will prove invaluable when making an emergency accident-avoidance mane.

2013 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty st and electric join newly redesigned lineup. introductionone of the most popular compacts on the market, the ford focus has a sharp, futuristic look that leaves behind old stereotypes of small, affordable american cars. Completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, the focus makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in its class. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard and a 6-speed automatic is optional, with selectshift manual mode an option for the automatic. The standard 2. 0-liter engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque.  epa fuel economy estimates for the 2013 ford focus are 26/36 mpg city/highway with 5-speed manual, 28/38 mpg with 6-speed automatic.  the new 2013 focus st features a more powerful 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine that cranks out an impressive 247 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Focus st comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and sport-tuned suspension. Focus st comes as a hatchback only with a special body kit. The sporty focus st is rated 23/32 mpg city/highway.  the focus electric is powered by a 107-kilowatt electric motor that has an estimated range of 76 miles per full charge and an epa energy efficiency equivalent rating of 110 mpge city and 99 mpge highway or 105 mpge combined. It's an electric car, so gas stations are a thing of the past. The focus electric competes most closely with the leaf, although the mitsubishi i-miev is a smaller, less expensive all-electric alternative. The soft materials are clearly high quality, while the hard trim looks slathered on. There's excellent legroom in front, but rear legroom is only moderate. The gauges are easy to read and include a big tachometer and speedometer with cool blue needles.  the 2013 focus uses the myford touch connectivity interface powered by microsoft's sync. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it was designed that way, but it doesn't always work that way. We found this latest version of myford touch difficult to use.  on the road, the focus is exceptionally quiet. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with luxury-levels of sound insulation practically everywhere, including the doors, windshield, carpet and headliner. Ride quality was smooth and soft. We found the standard engine extremely smooth with plenty of power. However, we thought the 6-speed automatic was imprecise in its shifting, while the 5-speed manual felt ropey.  the 2013 ford focus competes with the toyota corolla, honda civic, chevrolet cruze, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte and volkswagen jetta. lineupthe 2013 ford focus comes in sedan and hatchback versions. Focus comes standard with a 2. 0-liter engine. Still no usb port or bluetooth, and rear drums. Navigation with siriusxm traffic and travel link is optional. Other options include heated front seats, remote start system, cargo area protector.  focus st hatchback 23,700) features the more powerful 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine, 6-speed manual transmission, and sports suspension. Focus st comes with cloth seats.  focus electric 39,200) features an electric motor and a single-speed direct-drive transmission. The focus electric comes with cloth upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, 60/40 folding rear seats, myford touch and myford mobile interfaces, with two unique driving screens, rearview camera, reverse sensing system, mykey, rain-sensing wipers, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, rearview camera, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe ford focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The hatchback looks especially aerodynamic. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous (pre-2012) focus.  active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the chevrolet cruze are doing this, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split-trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps make the focus look being safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the focus chassis uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorthe first thing we notice about the focus is its seats. Focus models have had comfortable seats for years tne the current models come standard in sturdy fabric, with leather optional. The seats in the focus are much better than those in the chevrolet cruze.  the interior of the focus feels like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, we could easily imagine being a pilot with all those dials, switches, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the center stack, and led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors. The focus electric feels even more futuristic, with two screens that show information about driving efficiency, charge capacity and other do-dads related to the electric powertrain.  the gauges on the dashboard and instrument panel are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. However, we haven't been in a base s model, maybe it's got a more spartan interior missing the overkill trim. Ford says it's designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver. We're not sure they've succeeded in achievi. Bucket Seats✔ Power Locks✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Tachometer✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ Bluetooth✔ Remote Start✔ Cruise Control✔ Aluminum Wheels

2010 scion xb review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stylish box. introductionthe scion xb is a box on wheels. Completely redesigned for the 2008 model year, it is now in its second generation, a bit less boxy looking than the first generation models (2004-2007). Utility-wise, the xb is somewhat like the honda fit, with front-wheel drive, five doors, room for five passengers, good cargo space and lots of versatility. But it looks nothing like the fit.  inside, there is lots of cargo capacity, and versatility is enhanced with front seats that fully recline and 60/40-split rear seats that drop flat with one pull of a lever. All in all, the xb is nimble, responsive and fun to drive around town.  for 2010, new audio systems include a standard pioneer unit with ipod/usb connectivity, a programmable welcome message screen, and an rca output. An optional alpine premium system includes a 4. 3-inch color touch-screen monitor, hd radio technology, and optional navigation. lineupthe scion xb comes with a choice of manual transmission 15,850) or automatic 16,800).  standard equipment includes charcoal fabric interior, air conditioning, cruise control, information display, 160-watt pioneer audio system with ipod and auxiliary connection, tilt steering wheel with audio controls, remote keyless entry, power side mirrors with turn signal indicators, power windows, and door locks, halogen headlamps, tinted glass, 16-inch steel wheels with wheelcovers.  options include alloy wheels in 16-inch 795) and 17-inch 1,595) sizes, a rear spoiler 423), alpine premium audio 449), alpine premium audio with navigation 1,198), and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1,599). For those desiring high performance, scion dealers sell many trd (toyota racing development) parts, from superchargers to suspension items to aerodynamic kits.  safety features include vehicle stability control with traction control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist, a tire-pressure monitor, frontal and front side airbags, and side-curtain airbags. walkaroundbelieve it or not, the scion xb sort of has the limo look going for it. Maybe even a gangster look, like a sedan from the '20s. It's the roofline with the thick c-pillar that's located all the way at the back of the car, and the uninterrupted dark tinted windows. The roof-to-floor b-pillar is hidden between the doors, covered by parts of the black frames around the windows.  there's also a subtle 1. 5-inch taper from the height of the windows at the front of the front window to the rear of the rear window, adding to the effect of reducing the squareness and making the xb look longer. The headlamps are shapely and swept back, although they stick out at the sides, like bubbles. Below the thick plastic bumper under the grille, there's another black grille that sucks in air for the bottom of the radiator. At each side there are thin vertical black rubber things, apparently meant to be faux air intakes for brakes. They lend depth to the otherwise massive and flat valance.  even though it's a box, the long body, wide c-pillar, rounded fender flares, and integrated nose make the xb look not so squared-off from any angle. interiorthe interior of the scion xb fits with the exterior looks. The driver has a commanding view of the road. That's exceptional if not unique, for a car of this size. The short nose, big windshield, elevatable driver's seat, and far-away dashboard create this feel. The glass is nearly upright and doesn't sweep back very much.  there's not much of a stretch from the front-seat passenger's knees to the good-sized glovebox. It's mounted low so it folds down, possibly on the passenger's shins. Above the glovebox there is a long thin tray which might be useful if it had a liner that offered some grip, instead of the hard, slick vinyl.  charcoal is the only color for the fabric seats, which are comfortable and well bolstered, although they're shapeless and light on padding in the rear. The fabric isn't as sturdy, outdoorsy or cool as that in the mazda3, but charcoal makes the most of the cloth. At the far left is the information display, revealing things like fuel mileage and range. Then comes the clock, which is highly readable; unlike so many, the color is orange and it has an eave to reduce being washed out by sunlight. The digital speedometer is excellent, with big numbers that are, like those on the clock, easily readable. Beyond these are the gas gauge and temperature gauge.  there's a lot of sound dampening material in the xb, and it seems like most of it must be in the firewall. Or else the engine is just quiet. And for some reason there's only one backup light, on the driver's side. Is it a scion styling thing, like one earring or something?  scion has put special effort into the air conditioning, and it shows. The door handles, however, show little thought about ergonomics. They're horizontal, thin, barely two inches long, and tapered to a point.  most of the slim space between the seats is taken by two fixed cupholders, a slot for a cellphone, and the parking brake lever, leaving room for only a small console compartment rearward between the seats.  the 60/40-split rear seats fold flat easily, creating good cargo space behind the front seats. The front passenger seat reclines, and that's good for naps, but with the passenger seat down there isn't any more practical cargo space because it reclines right on top of the folded rear seat, so it sticks way up there. The latest epa ratings are 22/28 mpg city/highway for the xb.  throttle response is excellent and steady. The revs climb right up through the numbers on the tachometer, until the transmission upshifts at 6100 or 6200 rpm (even if it's in manual mode). The engine doesn't feel like it's working hard, it feels like it loves every chance it gets to leap between 3000 rpm and 6000 rpm.  just don't forget that the scion xb is not a sports car. Or maybe it was the five-speed manual transmission we were wishing for. This might be an annoyance if the xb weren't so eager about wanting to zoom forward. Every time it kicks down to third, it's happy. The front and rear rotors are. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Tachometer✔ Power Windows✔ Cruise Control✔ DVD Entertainment System✔ Air Conditioning✔ Alloy Wheels
